Apostolos Karantanas, MD, PhD

Dr. Apostolos Karantanas graduated the Medical School, University of Ioannina, Greece and completed Radiology training in University Ηospital of Ioannina. He undertook musculoskeletal training on metabolic bone disorders in New York University Medical Center and on MR imaging-MSK applications in Manchester Medical School/Manchester Royal Infirmary. He has been given more than 550 invited lectures in 32 countries and is a regular faculty member in European Congress of Radiology, IDKD (International Diagnostic Course Davos Excellence in Teaching), International Skeletal Society, Erasmus courses MSK MRI, School of MRI/ESMRMB, European School of Radiology and European Society of Skeletal Radiology. He is the author of more than 230 publications in peer review journals (h index 29/Scopus, 38/Google Scholar-citations 5150), 6 books (3 international), 67 chapters in books and 510 published announcements in international conferences. Prof. Karantanas is a reviewer in 33 Medline journals, Editorial Board in 5 and has been a Guest Editor in 3 issues of Medline journals.


His main research is focused on imaging of musculoskeletal disorders including trauma and emergencies, bone marrow, osteoporosis, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, hip joint disorders, applications of newer MR sequences and advanced models of data analysis focused on Imagenomics and Precision Medicine. He is past President of European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology, past President of the Hellenic Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology and past member of the Educational Committee of the European Association of Radiology. He served as Member of the ESOR Programme Planning Committee, Consultant to the Director-Thessaly Regional Health Service and as member of Undergraduate Studies Committee, member of Postgraduate Studies Committee and Vice Dean of the Medical School, University of Crete. He has been a Visiting Professor in 3 national and 2 European Universities.


Prof. Karantanas is currently Professor of Radiology – University of Crete, Chairman of the Department of Medical Imaging / Chairman Scientific Committee – Heraklion University Hospital, Affiliated Researcher in Computational BioMedicine Laboratory and Head Advanced Hybrid Imaging Systems / Institute of Computer Science – Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), Member of the Educational Committee and Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology, Member of the Sports Injuries Subcommittee/ESSR, General Secretary of the Hellenic College of Radiology, Honorary President of the Radiological Society of Crete, Member of Ethical Committee FORTH, Section Editor “European Journal of Radiology” and Associated Editor “Hellenic Journal of Radiology”. He is chairing the “Committee for Coordination of Academic Institutes” in Crete and is a board member of the “Greek Atomic Energy Commission”.
